Fertility Herbs And Supplements

Surrogacy in Laos

Laos Fertility knows that infertility can be a challenging problem to treat. Modern interventions such as IVF or artificial insemination and other fertility treatments can be effective, but are usually expensive, especially in a country like the U.S. It is not surprising, then, that many helpless couples look to herbs and supplements as a possible alternative treatment to this frustrating problem.

We know that there is currently no real consistent proof that herbs and supplements for infertility work. The main problem with fertility herbs and supplements is the research done on them lacks amplitude and quantity. There is just really not enough research to show that herbs and supplements to treat infertility really work. However, here are a few herbs and supplements that have been researched:

L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell. Studies have showed that men who took a combination of acetyl-L-Carnitine and L-Carnitine had increased sperm motility. The studies showed that this resulted in a slight increase in pregnancies.

Vitamin E. Vitamin E is found naturally in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. “Vitamin E” is the collective name for a group of fat-soluble compounds with distinctive antioxidant activities. Studies have showed that men with low sperm counts who take vitamin E may have a higher rate of fertilization. However, other studies found little to no enhancement in male fertility.

Coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is a compound found naturally in the energy-producing center of the cell known as the mitochondria. CoQ10 is involved in making an important molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP serves as the cell’s major energy source and drives a number of biological processes, including muscle contraction and the production of protein. CoQ10 also works as an antioxidant. Some studies have shown that coenzyme Q10 may improve sperm counts or motility. However, additional studies are needed to confirm these findings and to determine whether such findings lead to improved fertility.

Folic acid. Folic acid is a B-complex vitamin needed by the body to manufacture red blood cells. A deficiency of this vitamin causes certain types of anemia, which is when a person has a low red blood cell count. Some studies have shown that folic acid may improve sperm counts or motility. However, as with Coenzyme Q10, additional studies are needed in this area too.

Vitamin C. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. Unlike most mammals and other animals, humans do not have the ability to make their own vitamin C. Therefore, we must obtain vitamin C through our diet. Vitamin C is also a highly effective antioxidant. Laos Fertility has learned that even taking in small amounts vitamin C can be beneficial to one’s body. There have been some small studies that have shown an improvement in women fertility when they took vitamin C. However, additional research is needed to prove such claims.

Laos Fertility suggests that although it might seem safe to take herbs and natural supplements to treat infertility, one should consider these important caveats:

Herbs and supplements have limited Food and Drug Administration regulation. Herbal and nutritional supplements are subjected to limited regulation by the Food and Drug Administration and are only now starting to be held to rigorous purity and quality standards.

Herbs and natural supplements have a potential for drug interaction. Conventional hormone and drug treatments for infertility are complex regimens. It is not known how herbs or supplements may interact with such treatments.

We recommend that until researchers can clearly define the risks and/or benefits of fertility herbs and supplements, conventional treatment for infertility appears to be the best option.
