Should You Breastfeed?

Pros And Cons Of Breastfeeding

Laos Fertility knows that breastfeeding is a personal decision and sometimes is not an easy one to make. We know that this issue has drawn a lot of attention over the past decade, so we wanted to come up with a list of pros and cons of breastfeeding in order to help shed some light on this debate.

PRO: Breastfeeding is convenient and will save you money. You will not have to purchase breast milk or formula and you will not have to make up bottles. This alone can save you a lot of time and money. For instance, formula alone can cost a family anywhere from $1,200 to $2,400 a year. Additionally, sometimes there could be a shortage of baby formula just like what’s happening in the U.S. now.

CON: Breast feeding is not always easy to do. Experts suggest that there is a 2 week learning curve and recommends that women take a course on breastfeeding. This way, they will be better prepared for the daily duty. We know that taking a class on breastfeeding also helps because women are all shaped differently. Some women can occur a more difficult time than other women for a number of reasons, such as little breast tissue, nipple shape, narrow ducts, or low milk production.

PRO: Breastfeeding is a way to bond with your baby. Mothers get a sense of well-being and feel good that they can be the nurturer. We know that this is instinctive in all women.

CON: Breast feeding will prevent you from doing other things. Because babies need to eat every couple of hours and this is no easy task, especially if you have to work or have other responsibilities or obligations.
PRO: Breastfeeding assists a woman in healing faster. When women breastfeed, the release of oxytocin causes mild contractions that help the uterus shrink back to normal size.

CON: Breastfeeding is painful. Laos Fertility has learned that 1 in every 4 women experience pain or suffer from bleeding nipples, larger breasts that are more sensitive, low-grade yeast infections on nipples, mastitis, or additional complications.

PRO: Breastfeeding will prevent ovulation. During the time a woman is breastfeeding, she does not need to use any birth control for the first 6 months. We know that the chances of a woman getting pregnant during the first months of breastfeeding is less than 2%.

CON: A woman will have to be careful of what she eats and drinks. She should not consume too much caffeine or alcohol. Additionally, some foods may not be good for women to consume while she is breastfeeding.

PRO: Breastfeeding can actually help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. Laos Fertility has learned that research shows that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 10%. Additionally, breastfeeding has also been shown to reduce the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers.

CON: breastfeeding will lower a woman’s libido. Since a woman will not ovulate during the first 6 months of breastfeeding, no natural testosterone occurs. This is what helps to stimulate her sex drive. Also, an initial decrease in estrogen levels in a woman’s body can cause dryness in her vagina.

PRO: Breastfeeding can help to strengthen a baby’s immune system. The reason why this occurs is because colostrum, a thick yellowish substance that comes in before milk, contains tons of immunoglobulin’s that kill bacteria and viruses.

CON: Breastfeeding will disrupt your workday. A woman will have to pump if she works and she must do this 3 to 4 times a day, so this may cause a challenge for women who have demanding jobs.
PRO: Breastfeeding can help boost brain function in your baby. This occurs because of the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids that are in breast milk.

CON: Breastfeeding is not a way to lose weight like some women think. Even though breastfeeding can burn up to 500 calories a day, it also lowers estrogen levels, making nursing moms insulin-resistant, so they process carbs less efficiently. We know that women breastfeeding should keep on an additional 10 to 15 pounds of fat so both baby and mother get the required daily nutrients.

We hoped that you enjoyed reading these pros and cons of breastfeeding and use your best judgment in making a viable decision to do it or not.
